we have to start ridiculing climbing mount everest the way we’ve ridiculed diving to the titanic there’s no reason to be dying up there why dont you do a nice normal sport

Shitty take. Diving to the Titanic shouldn’t be ridiculed either as long as you have proper safety measures in place, and on the submarine. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Okay. Have fun down there. Say hi to those other guys for us

In all seriousness though, Mount Everest is sacred to the Sherpa people who act as guides because of religious obligation, yet they have no official say over what is done with the mountain that has become covered in litter and corpses because of the tourism industry. These people repeatedly risk their lives because of the tourists and receive barely any recognition or respect for it, in fact just earlier this year a climber whose life was saved by his Sherpa guide blocked the guide on Instagram afterwards. We should absolutely be shaming people climbing Mount Everest.

Not to mention the economic exploitation that the Sherpa face from and as a result of tourists/tourism and the Nepalese government itself as a result. Their labor and very lives are consistently exploited to meet the demands of Nepal’s focus on climbing and mountaineering dependent tourism.

Okay, here’s my idea:

The British should put a time limit on the Monarchy.

Not like declaring a republic tomorrow, but deciding on a date in the future that ends the British Monarchy.

And there’s a perfect date for it coming up!

October 14th, 2066.

A thousand years since the Battle of Hastings. A thousand years of this one specific bloodline ruling England.

Call time on the Monarchy after exactly one thousand years. Nice, and neat.

Even better: Charles isn’t living 44 years. He’ll be gone in about twenty. Now William? He’s what, 40? Yeah, he can live another 44 years. His great grandmother was over a hundred, his granny was 96, William can make it to 84 barring accident or assassination.

So on October 14th 2066, William the Last steps down a thousand years after William the First won the crown.

Nice, neat, and fair. William gets the crown he’s been waiting forty years for already, but ten-year-old George grows up without expectation of it.

Have a nice big abdication ceremony, even.

Plus, what an absolute baller move to announce your regnal name as William the Last.

the Final Bill

This is actually a really good idea, I think.

I’m a lesbian and somehow I manage to walk down the street and not ogle women I find attractive, or cat call or degrade them, or touch them without permission, or interrupt their daily lives, it’s almost as if I’m treating them like human beings despite my attraction to them. What an insane concept.

omg same

We were arguing about dress code in a meeting at work. And while my department knows I’m queer the other departments did not. As people (men) were saying that women showing skin and wearing tight clothes was distracting. I spoke up finally and said.

“I’m attracted to women.”

Everyone turned and looked at me and I was like “uhhh” so I finished.

“I’m attracted to women and I can still do my job. Regardless of what someone in my class is wearing. I can still teach. So why can’t you?”

The men all stayed silent.

Everyone turned and

“uhhh” so I finished.

Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.

the bait and switch way this is written literally made me laugh out loud

biden: my new plan guarantees four additional years of free education

kids in high school: holy shit free college?!

biden: oh no two years of pre-school and then two years of college*

*only at select locations, restrictions apply

Okay but pre-school is expensive as hell. Making it free will directly improve the lives of so many families.

so is community college it will literally cut the cost of college in half or make it free for the people that choose one of the many careers you can get with a two year degree are y'all stupid or just dumb

do ppl actually not realise how important affordable childcare is to working women???

Hi, I’m a mum! Pre-pandemic, I was working over forty hours a week, and the entirety of my paycheck went to covering my kid’s daycare cost. Daycare and pre school are expensive, so much so that a lot of people quite literally can’t afford it, even when working full time.

Having two years of pre-k education covered is absolutely beyond helpful. Parents genuinely want to provide the very best for the kids and having early education covered can go a long way in allowing parents to do just that.

Look, I don’t have kids and I am still buried under student loans from college. I absolutely believe free college is necessary.

However.

There is decades worth of evidence that pre-K education is one of the strongest ways of giving kids enduring advantages in K-12 education. A lot of the data comes specifically out of Oklahoma, which does have voluntary universal pre-K (which makes it an excellent case study) and the research shows gains across all racial and socio-economic boundaries. That paper is from 2005. Researchers revisited the kids later to see how persistent these gains were, or if they were drowned out by all the other stuff.

Turns out, the kids who were in pre-K continued to have academic success through middle school (they hadn’t tracked through high school). And just for fun, they also did some projected adult earnings for kids who went through pre-K, as fun benefit-cost analysis of the whole thing. And it looks like the benefits skew disproportionately in favor of the more disadvantaged students.

Community college is great and should be accessible to everybody. But universal pre-K will catch more kids early on to ensure they have a better shot at finishing high school. The evidence screams that it is one of the single most-effective measures in leveling the playing field for all kids, and reducing the generations of privilege baked into the system.

And Biden’s campaign stance was always two years of free community college, NOT four years at any and all universities.

It’s not a bait and switch if it’s the two years of college he previously “promised” us PLUS something new and different that is explained IN THE NEXT / SAME SENTENCE so people wouldn’t get confused and think it meant four years of college.

The wording of the tweet is a little bit bait-and-switch if you haven’t been staying on top of the policy discussions, but even so: this is a really good thing, please don’t dismiss all the good that this policy will do just because it’s not everything you want it to be.

I feel like this is also a subtle way to encourage going to community colleges for trades rather than four year degrees, which is something that we desperately need since we basically lost most of a generation of skilled tradespeople in the push for “you have to get a four year degree to succeed”

Photographed by Martin Schoeller for The New Yorker in 2002:

"I was hired by the New Yorker in 2002 to photograph Robin Williams, and after doing my research what stood out most for me was that he was a very physical comedian. I came up with this idea to photograph him swinging from a chandelier in a grand hotel room. Most publicists shoot down these kinds of wild ideas, so I didn’t tell anyone what I was up to, but rigged up a chandelier at the Waldorf Astoria hotel for him to swing from. When Robin got there and saw what was happening, he lifted up his shirt and showed me this enormous scar on his shoulder. He’d just had surgery and couldn’t so much as lift his arm. He was so disappointed! He really felt bad about not being able to do it, because he loved the idea and really wanted to help me accomplish my vision.

Unlike most Hollywood stars, he was unfazed by his success and position. He talked to everyone from stylists to the crew, to the hotel staff. We ended up asking a maid at the hotel to swing from the chandelier instead, and I asked him to just sit there and read a newspaper, which I think in the end was an even funnier, more unexpected picture.

[Follies Of God]

[ID: a photo of Robin Williams sitting in a mostly empty room reading a newspaper. He is perched on a coffee table with his legs crossed, wearing a red jacket and bright blue shoes, and is reading with an amused expression on his face. Behind him, a woman in a beige maid uniform is swinging from a chandelier and smiling. /end ID.]

In 2010 I was at a very fancy Hollywood Oscar party and I am no good at parties and had made up my mind to leave. I was introduced to a young woman whose name I hadn’t caught who, when I told her how uncomfortable I was, told me that her dad was there and she and she and he would look after me. She told me that her dad was the Sandman fan and had got her hooked, which was why she was wearing an ankh that night.

I was desperate for someone nice and headed out with her across the lawn to where her dad was holed up. I assumed he was a producer or something. As we got close and I did see him under the tent canopy I realized who her dad was. Zelda Williams and I have stayed friends. Her father did the equivalent of pulling a thorn from my foot, and I spent the evening with them enjoying the party as much as I could, because now I had friends. I remember him with such gratitude.
